Was And Were

Pada bahan sebelumnya telah dibahas mengenai simple past tense dalam bentuk  verbal sentence  kini kita akan membahas  simple past tense yang menggunakan "was dan were" atau dengan kata lain dalam bentuk nominal sentence. Jika dalam simple present tense kita mengenal adanya  is, am, are  maka dalam simple past tense kita mengenal adanya "was dan were". Saya yakin semua sudah pada mengetahui bahwa dalam simple past tense kita menggunakan verb bentuk ke 2, dan bentuk kedua dari is, am, are ialah was dan were.

I am a student.                                                I was a student.
She is clever.                                                  She was clever.
Toni is in the bedroom.                                   Toni was in the bedroom 2 hours ago.

Perhatikan pola di atas, jikalau kita menyampaikan "I am a student" berarti kini ini si subjek memang seorang pelajar, jikalau kalimat "I was a student" berarti kini si subjek bukan seorang pelajar lagi dengan kata lain si subjek menyampaikan bahwa pada masa lampau dia ialah seorang pelajar.
"Toni is in the bedroom" berarti kini ini memang Toni sedang berada di kamar. "Toni was in the bedroom 2 hours ago" berarti dua jam yang kemudian Toni ada di kamar kini dan kini tidak lagi.
