Seringkali kita menjumpai ungkapan-ungkapan yang terbentuk dari kata yang gampang dimengerti, namun menjadi sulit dipahami aritnya sebab kata tersebut merupakan bentuk frasa. Ungkapan-ungkapan yang demikian (special expression) dapat pula ditebak artinya melalui konteksnya dalam kalimat utuh. Berikut ini contohnya:
- had hard time = mengalami masa sulit
The famous Mark Twain had hard time when he was young.
- the people of his time = orang-orang pada zamannya
In these two books and in his other stories, he gives an accurate picture of everyday life and of the characters of the people of his time
- to help secure a living = ikut mencari nafkah
He was forced to leave school and to help secure a living for his family.
- The mother of invention = induk penemuan
It is said that necessity is the mother of invention.
- power plants = pabrik pembangkit tenaga listrik
The sun can also be used as a source of fuel for power of plants.
- so the story goes = begitu kisanya
Once there was an old lady, so the story goes, who loved to play the piano.
- For sale = dijual
A piano for sale
- well known = terkenal, came to be called = kemudian disebut
This idea made Avogadro well known, and his law came to be called Avogadro's law.
- Let alone = apalagi
No tiger, let alone a crocodile, can run faster than a wild horse.
- Good command of English = menguasai bahasa Inggris dengan baik
- For some reason = sebab beberapa alasan, above sea level = di atas garis permukaan laut
For some reason, the crust at the bottom of the sea began to rise above sea level.
